The Long and the Short of Time, 2020-2021. Permanent installation, OH Bay Cultural Park, Shenzhen, China. Commissioned by Shangqi Art.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, many of us have looked to nature for respite and have found a new appreciation of nature as therapy and as a momentary escape from our reliance on technologies. This installation is meant to commemorate our constantly shifting relationship with nature, technology, time and nuanced ideas of progress. The poetics of the piece lie in the quality of the materials and forms that will perceptively change rather dramatically as light and atmospheric conditions shift over time. Though the stump sculptures are structural, they will sometimes act as ghosts, seemingly barely there. At other times, they will glow with what seems like an internal light gathered from the sun. Sited within a newly opened park and cultural development, The Long and the Short of Time bridges ideas of development and progress with an acknowledgment of natureʼs profundity and vulnerability.
